  • Classification: Part-time seasonal employment

    Job Description: Manage the waterfront facilities while providing a safe and fun experience for SYC membership, students, and employees. Weekends and evenings.

    The Waterfront Director (WD) is responsible for the following:

    • Management of the SYC Staff including daily responsibilities and training.

    • Check and verify hours for staff and assist with payroll activities.

    • Providing SYC members with friendly and courteous experience.

    • Uphold the SYC Rules and Regulations.

    • Ensure day-to-day safety and functionality of the waterfront.

    • Complying with Farm Pond Rules and Regulations.

    • Maintaining and repairing the SYC fleet, docks, floats, moorings, and shed.

    • Facilitate and delegate tasks during downtime to ensure general upkeep of property.

    • Ensure essential tasks are completed daily.

    • Coordinating with the Instructional Sailing and Assistant Waterfront Directors.

    • Keep the SYC Board of Directors informed weekly of developments or needs related to maintenance, safety, personnel, membership and environmental stewardship.

    Qualifications

    • Must be 18 years or older by June 15, 2025

    • Two years of sailing experience required, instructional experience preferred; comfortable rigging and operating sailboats independently.

    • Current First Aid and Advanced CPR Certification; Red Cross Lifeguard Certification preferred.

      Previous staff management experience, experience with teenagers preferred.

    • Excellent managerial and organizational skills; ability to multitask.

    • Initiative to self-manage, prioritize tasks, and complete projects.

    • Available on evenings and weekends during the season.

    Other responsibilities

    • Organize and coordinate activities on the SYC waterfront.

    • Maintain and convey high expectations for safety, quality, effort, and member service.

    • Manage Staff, including workload, repairs, and other duties.

    • Provide a high level of customer service to SYC members, volunteers, town officials, and others.

    • Attend all staff meetings, work with Commodore, Vice Commodore, Instructional and Administrator.

    • Address issues with support staff.

    • Assist with planning, organizing, set-up, teardown, and staffing of events throughout the season.

    • Maintain current records of boat usage, user visits, major repairs needed, wind, weather, etc.

    • Be familiar with offerings of the SYC (memberships, classes, and events) and be able to answer questions from members and non-members.

    • Being a role model for inclusive behavior and fostering a positive group atmosphere.

    • Utilize and update the Waterfront Director Dashboard before and during season.

    • Submit weekly summaries through Dashboard of issues with members, students, equipment, and others.

    • Complete end of season staff evaluations for hiring.

    • Attend Waterfront Director trainings before the season starts.

    • Plan and run Staff orientation and training including expectations, systems, procedures & skills.

    • Attend SYC board of directors meetings, as necessary.

    Job Description: Manage the sailing and paddling instructional activities while providing a safe and fun experience for SYC membership, students, and employees.

    The Instructional Director (ID) is responsible for the following:

    • Management of sailing and paddling instructional activities.

    • Management of the SYC Instructors including daily responsibilities, scheduling, and training, with support from Waterfront Director and Assistant Instructional Director.

    • Follow curriculum and tailor activities where needed with easy-to-follow guidance for building skills at the beginner and intermediate lessons.

    • Communicate effectively and frequently with sailing school guardians regarding expectations, weather related alerts, and equipment reminders.

    • Create a fair rotation for instructors teaching private lessons.

    • Plan and staff sailing portions of events, as needed.

    • Ensure safety of all sailors while on and off the water.

    • Provide SYC members and lesson registrants with friendly and courteous service.

    • Uphold the SYC Rules, Courtesies and Code of Conduct.

    • Comply with Farm Pond Rules and Regulations.

    • Coordinate with the Waterfront Director regarding boat maintenance and scheduling vessel use for lessons.

    Qualifications

    • Must be 18 years or older before June 15, 2025.

    • At least three years of sailing experience is required, advanced dinghy sailing experience preferred.

    • Must be comfortable operating a sailboat independently in all conditions and remain calm during emergencies.

    • Current First Aid and Advanced CPR Certification; Red Cross Lifeguard Certification preferred.

    • Available on evenings and weekends during the season for events, and to help in waterfront roles.

    • Previous staff management experience, experience with teenagers preferred.

    • Excellent managerial and organizational skills; ability to multitask.

    Job Description: Assist Waterfront Director in managing the waterfront facilities while providing a safe and fun experience for SYC membership, students, and employees. Weekends and evenings.

    • Management of the Dock Staff in Training (DSIT) including teaching and supervising completion of tasks needed to progress to Dock Staff role.

    • Lead shifts and take role of WD when necessary including vacation.

    • Providing SYC members with friendly and courteous experience.

    The Sherborn Yacht Club is seeking experienced, motivated Sailing Instructors for all levels for our 2025 Sailing Program. SYC Sailing Instructors teach students of all ages and varying experience levels. Instruction occurs both on land and on the water.

    Sailing Instructors will support training and racing in Quests, Zests, O’pen Skiffs, and Prams. Sailing Instructor experience is preferred.

    This year’s Sailing Program will run from June 17th (or June 23th based on snow days) to August 15 weekdays from 8:45-4:15 with instructor training before and potential additional offerings after these dates.

    Typical schedule during Sailing School (Class descriptions):

    8:45-9:00 - Set up for the day, check equipment

    9:00 - 12:00 - Morning class (Intro AM, Mariners, Week of Fun)

    9:00-9:10 - Student arrival and check-in

    9:10-9:30 - Chalk talk, introduction of activity for day

    9:30-10:15 - On the water

    10:15-10:30 - Snack

    10:30-11:30 - On the water

    11:30-12:00 - Derig, debrief, student departure

    12:00-1:00 - Lunch, debrief with other instructors and prepare for afternoon

    1:00-4:00 - Afternoon class (Intro PM, Mariners PM, First Mates, Skippers)

    4:00-4:15 - Equipment check and debrief

    Sailing Instructors have the additional responsibility to pick up extra hours as Dock Staff, and may be asked to cover waterfront responsibilities as needed. Additional events outside of Sailing School will require help from instructors.

    Requirements:

    • Must be a competent sailor and swimmer.

    • At least two years of sailing experience is required, advanced dinghy sailing experience preferred.

    • Must have good interpersonal skills—and a desire to help others improve their sailing abilities.

    • Must inspect equipment before and after class, explain and demonstrate proper sailing technique, supervise and ensure the safety of students, keep records of attendance and direct students during equipment cleanup.

    • Must be 17 years old (born before June 2008) and available to work during the summer months.

    • Individuals must have a valid First Aid and CPR certification (or be willing to get one) before June 15th, 2025 with an expiration date after September 1st, 2025. The SYC will aim to run sessions with the Sherborn Fire Department before the season starts for any staff who do not have a certificate.

    The Sherborn Yacht Club is seeking experienced, motivated Dock Staff for our 2025 season, which runs from mid-June until Labor Day. Operating hours are 9am until 7pm everyday including holidays. As this is a seasonal position, there is no overtime pay available.

    Dock Staff are ambassadors of the Club and charged with assisting SYC members and maintaining our waterfront facility.

    The Dock Staff schedule is split into three shifts during normal hours:

    8:45-12:00 - AM shift

    12:00-4:00 - Noon shift

    4:00-7:15 - PM shift

    Requirements:

    • Must be articulate and welcoming with strong interpersonal skills and a knack for customer service.

    • Must be a fast thinker with ability to navigate challenges on and off the water.

    • Must be highly responsible with proven ability to lead peers and teammates.

    • The SYC operates the waterfront weekends from Memorial Day until school ends, then daily until Labor Day or the start of school. The Dock Staff are expected to clearly articulate availability to work, and the SYC is seeking to fill these positions with folks who are available for most of the season.

    • Must be at least 16 years old (born before June 2009).

    • Individuals must have a valid First Aid and CPR certification (or be willing to get one) before June 15th, 2025 with an expiration date after September 1st, 2025. Must be capable of handling a sailboat independently.

    The Sherborn Yacht Club is seeking an adult to serve as a staff mentor for our 2025 season, which runs from mid-June until Labor Day.

    The club aims to promote sailing and other sports on Farm Pond while educating children and adults about water safety and environmental stewardship. We seek to provide a nurturing and an inclusive atmosphere that supports the Town of Sherborn as a whole. Personal growth is key to our instructional and recreational programs with an emphasis on community and social engagement.

    Ideally, we are looking for someone who has experience as a teacher, camp coordinator, or other role working with children and teenagers. Sailing experience is a plus, but not a requirement.

    Our primary objective is to have FUN! The purpose of our summer programs is to get people outside and this role entails creating a fun and nurturing environment for kids - helping our college/HS staff members to provide a safe and happy environment that keeps people wanting to come back day after day.

    We estimate ~10 hours on the waterfront a week, with a potential for additional hours offsite. You will have input on your schedule, but must be flexible to meet the needs of class hours and activities and help support where need is identified. The waterfront runs from 8:45am to 7:15pm, with a class session in the morning and one in the afternoon.

    General Overview:

    • Serve as a sounding board and provide guidance for any concerns the directors or staff bring to you (determine when and how to intervene and respond).

      • E.g. addressing a staff member that is not showing up for shifts

    • Observe waterfront and on-the water behavior to identify and avoid any potential issues.

    • Be a calming presence at the waterfront to set a welcoming and inclusive tone.

    • Also be an enthusiastic presence at the waterfront to encourage fun and camaraderie.

    • Serve as a liaison with the SYC board and bring any urgent matters to their attention.
